A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventures follows a sea turtle from the moment he hatches on a California beach in 1959. Sammy's first scramble to the water brings him together with Shelly, a young turtle he helps and then loses sight of, and the rest of his long life is shaped by the search for her and by the changes happening around him. His travels take him across the oceans over roughly five decades, alongside his friend Ray, and put him in contact with a world increasingly altered by human activity.
The film is a Belgian, Italian, American and French co-production, directed by Ben Stassen and written by Domonic Paris, who also produced with Stassen and Mimi Maynard. It sits third in Stassen's directing filmography, between Fly Me to the Moon and the later sequel A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise, with further titles such as The House of Magic and The Son of Bigfoot following. The English voice cast includes Yuri Lowenthal, Gemma Arterton, Isabelle Fuhrman, Melanie Griffith, Tim Curry and John Hurt.
Released in 2010 and running 88 minutes, the animated family film took in about 72 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for its scale. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 8,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 700 votes, indicating modest but consistent audience approval.
