Set in Beijing in 1937, Hidden Man follows a young martial artist who returns home to look into a killing. What he finds draws him into a world of espionage and revenge, as Japanese agents work to recruit operatives in a city caught between old loyalties and outside pressure. The story is an action-driven crime drama built around a man preparing to settle a score, and it is the third entry in a loose trilogy that also includes Let the Bullets Fly and Gone with the Bullets.
Jiang Wen directed and co-wrote the film with Ho Kei-ping and Li Fei, and he also appears in the cast as Lan Qingfeng. Eddie Peng plays Li Tianran, with Liao Fan, Zhou Yun, Xu Qing and Ding Jiali in supporting roles. The film runs 137 minutes and was released in July 2018. It sits seventh in Jiang Wen's directing filmography, between Gone with the Bullets and You are the Best, and it shares with those earlier titles a 1930s Chinese setting and a mix of period detail and genre action.
Reception was mixed but respectable. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from about 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller base of 91 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from seven reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded a little more warmly than general viewers did.
