Shoplifters

In Tokyo, a family scraping by on low-paid work and petty shoplifting takes in a young girl they find alone in the cold. The household is headed by Osamu Shibata, who steals alongside his son Shota; his wife Nobuyo is at first unwilling to keep the child, then accepts her. Grandmother Hatsue and Aki, who works in the sex industry, complete the group. Though money is short, the six live together with apparent warmth until an unexpected incident exposes buried secrets and the ties between them are tested. Hirokazu Kore-eda directed and wrote the film, the tenth of the sixteen features he has directed, following The Third Murder and preceding The Truth.

Lily Franky plays Osamu, with Sakura Ando as Nobuyo, Mayu Matsuoka as Aki, Kairi Jo as Shota, Miyu Sasaki as Yuri and Kirin Kiki as Hatsue. Kore-eda produced with Hijiri Taguchi and Akihiko Yose. The film earned 68 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a Japanese drama of this kind. On IMDb it holds 7.9 from around 95,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8 from roughly 2,400 votes. Critics rated it 8.8 from about 230 reviews, placing it clearly above those audience scores.
