Short description

Descendants 3 continues the story of the teenage children of Disney's villains, who have settled into life at Auradon Prep. Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay travel back to the Isle of the Lost to bring a new group of villain offspring to Auradon, but a breach at the magical barrier forces Mal to seal it for good, closing off the island and leaving its inhabitants behind. The decision has consequences for both worlds, as an unexpected dark force gathers strength and threatens the kingdom, pushing the friends to unite once more against a common enemy.

Kenny Ortega, who also directed the first two Descendants films, returns here at the end of a career that includes Newsies, the High School Musical series and This Is It. Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon wrote the screenplay, and the cast features Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, China Anne McClain and Sarah Jeffery, with a credited team of 66 performers and 79 crew members behind the production.

The film carries a budget of 15 million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from just over ten thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.7 from a much smaller pool of around 1,600 votes, so the two audiences differ noticeably in how they received it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Much like the parents of the four main villain children (including Mal's mother, Maleficent, who does not appear in any form in the film), Lonnie (daughter of Mulan and Li Shang) is the only character from the trilogy who does not appear in this movie. The actress who played the role, Diane Doan, was busy filming other projects.
  • The final role in the franchise for Cameron Boyce. On July 6, 2019, the actor who played Carlos passed away from an epileptic seizure at the age of 20.
  • Uma's necklace (played by China Anne McClain) is activated with the same sound as the Martian scanner in Byron Haskin's sci-fi action film 'The War of the Worlds' (1953).
  • In one of the scenes, Ivy's shoes (played by Sofia Carson) change from ankle boots to hybrid sneaker wedges and back again.
  • Audrey uses Maleficent's scepter to turn Mal into an old woman. In this form, Mal closely resembles the old hag that the Evil Queen transformed into to deceive Snow White in the classic animated film 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (1937).
  • In one of the scenes, you can spot actress Jada Marie's stunt double accidentally appearing in the frame instead of the actress herself.
  • Audrey's hair (played by Sarah Jeffery) is highlighted in pink and blue. In the Disney animated film 'Sleeping Beauty' (1958), the good fairies constantly argued over whether Aurora's dress—Audrey's mother—should be pink or blue, and used their magic to change its color repeatedly.
