McQueen

McQueen is a British documentary about the fashion designer Alexander McQueen, following his rise from a working-class upbringing in East London to international prominence in the fashion world. Raised without obvious advantages, he pursued clothing design from an early age and built a career that carried him into the upper reaches of an industry far removed from his background. The film traces that ascent while also examining the inner struggles that accompanied it, drawing on interviews with family members and people close to him, along with archival material and footage of his designs.

The documentary was directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, with Ettedgui also writing the screenplay. It is the second film Bonhôte directed, after Alleycats, and the first for Ettedgui; the two later collaborated again on a documentary about Christopher Reeve. The cast consists largely of McQueen himself through archive footage, alongside figures from fashion and business such as Bernard Arnault, Kate Moss, Jodie Kidd, Joseph Bennett and Magdalena Frackowiak, who appear as themselves.

Released in 2018, McQueen runs 111 minutes and had a worldwide box office of about 1 million USD, a modest figure typical of documentary releases. Audiences received it well: on IMDb it holds 7.7/10 from roughly 8,900 votes, and on TMDB 7.4/10 from 146 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 126 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, indicating strong professional recognition for the film.
