Short description
A team of horror web series creators travels to the Gonjiam psychiatric hospital in South Korea to conduct a live broadcast. The abandoned facility is notorious for legends involving ghosts and a mysterious history of patient deaths. As the group explores the building in search of a specific room, they discover that the site is far more dangerous than they anticipated.
Directed by Jung Bum-shik, this horror-mystery film is the second project in his career, following Casa Amor: Exclusive for Ladies and preceding New Normal. The screenplay was written by Jung and Park Sang-min. The cast is led by Wi Ha-jun, Park Ji-hyun, and Oh Ah-yeon, appearing alongside Moon Ye-won, Park Sung-hoon, and Lee Seung-wook. The production was handled by Hive Media Corp.
The film earned 21 million USD at the worldwide box office. It holds a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 24,000 votes and a 7.3/10 on TMDB from 1,002 votes. Film critics provided a rating of 6.8/10 from 13 reviews, which is slightly higher than the score on IMDb but lower than the rating on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- The abandoned Konjiam Psychiatric Hospital is located in Gwangju. It was closed for economic reasons in 1996, but local legends say it was due to a series of mysterious patient deaths.
- Filming took place in a derelict school building in Busan, but the floor plans and interiors of the actual Konjiam Hospital were accurately recreated in post-production.
- In 2012, CNN included Konjiam Hospital in its list of the 7 most haunted places on the planet. The list also included the Sedlec Ossuary, Hashima Island (Battleship Island), the Pripyat amusement park, the Island of the Dolls in Mexico, the Aokigahara forest (Suicide Forest) in Japan, and the voodoo market in Togo. Since then, the building has attracted tourists from all over the world.
