Short description
Alexandre Guérin lives in Lyon with his wife and their children. By chance he learns that the priest who molested him decades earlier at a scouting camp still works with young people. He decides to act, and two other men, François Debord and Emmanuel Thomassin, who were abused by the same priest, join him to break the silence surrounding what they went through. Their efforts set off a chain of consequences that affects everyone involved.
The film is directed and written by François Ozon, his fourteenth feature in a career of twenty films, coming between Double Lover and Summer of 85. Melvil Poupaud plays Alexandre, with Denis Ménochet and Swann Arlaud as the other two accusers; Éric Caravaca, François Marthouret and Bernard Verley appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 66. It is a Belgian-French drama running 137 minutes.
By the Grace of God was released in February 2019. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from around 600 votes, while a critics' score of 7.6 out of 10 from 98 reviews places it close to, and slightly above, the audience verdict.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film recounts real events. The father of Preyn's lawyers attempted to prevent the film's release, even though it received the Jury Grand Prix (Silver Bear) at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. The defense focused on the presumption of innocence, but the court ruled that the film could be released, as the accused had already admitted guilt in the seduction of several dozen boys.
