Carmen Jones

Carmen Jones is a 1954 musical drama set in an American army camp. Carmen, a civilian worker in the parachute factory, draws the attention of many soldiers, but she sets her sights on Joe, a young man engaged to the gentle Cindy Lou. When Carmen gets into trouble, Sergeant Brown assigns Joe to escort her to prison, and the journey sets off a chain of events that pushes Joe to turn his back on his fiancée and his military career.

The film was directed by Otto Preminger, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Harry Kleiner. It was the sixth of the sixteen films Preminger directed, coming between River of No Return and The Man with the Golden Arm. Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge lead the cast as Joe and Carmen, with Pearl Bailey, Olga James, Joe Adams and Brock Peters in supporting roles.
