Short description
Crawl is a survival horror film set in Florida as a category 5 hurricane bears down on the coast. Haley Keller ignores the evacuation orders and drives into the storm to search for her missing father, Dave. She finds him badly injured in the crawlspace beneath their family home, and the rising floodwater soon traps them both inside. The water is not the only danger: alligators have entered the flooded house, and father and daughter must find a way out before the storm and the animals close in.
Alexandre Aja directed the film, working from a screenplay by Shawn Rasmussen and Michael Rasmussen. It sits between The 9th Life of Louis Drax and Oxygen in Aja's filmography, and Sam Raimi produced it alongside Aja and Craig J. Flores. Kaya Scodelario plays Haley and Barry Pepper plays Dave, with Morfydd Clark, Ross Anderson, Jose Palma and George Somner in supporting roles. The production involved 231 credited crew members and was made across Canada, the United States and Serbia.
Made for a budget of 14 million USD, Crawl went on to earn 92 million USD worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from around 102,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 3,470 votes. The film critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 213 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on a real case that occurred during Hurricane Florence (August-September 2018).
- The scene in which the heroine drives a car through a hurricane with a dog in the passenger seat was filmed against a blue screen in a huge tank containing sets of houses, a gas station, and a playground. A dog trainer sat in the back seat, giving commands to the dog.
- Although the film depicts extremely aggressive behavior of Mississippi alligators, in reality they (unlike crocodiles) rarely attack people.
