Short description

Stuber follows a Los Angeles Uber driver named Stu Prasad, whose uneventful day takes a sharp turn when he picks up Vic Manning, a detective who has just had laser eye surgery on his eyes and cannot drive himself. Vic is pursuing a drug dealer, and with his vision temporarily unreliable, he coerces Stu into chauffeuring him around the city. What begins as a single fare becomes a long day of stakeouts and violent confrontations as the reluctant driver is dragged deeper into the investigation, all while he tries to protect his rating on the app.

The film was directed by Michael Dowse, arriving between his 2013 feature What If and his later work on Coffee & Kareem, from a screenplay by Tripper Clancy. Dave Bautista plays Vic and Kumail Nanjiani plays Stu, with Mira Sorvino, Natalie Morales, Iko Uwais and Betty Gilpin in supporting roles. It is an American action comedy with a runtime of 93 minutes.

Stuber was made for about 16 million US dollars and took roughly 32 million worldwide, a modest return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 54,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from far fewer votes. A film critics' rating of 5.2 from 229 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • For filming the sci-fi action film “Eternals” (2021) by Chloé Zhao, which ran concurrently with filming Michael Dowse’s action film (2019), Kumail Nanjiani, who played Stu, gained over 11 kg of muscle mass. This didn’t quite suit him in the role of Stu, but the costume designers selected a wardrobe that concealed the actor’s physique.
  • After the shootout at the veterinarian's, white doves begin to fly around the room. This is a reference to John Woo's films, which often show white doves during or just before action scenes.
