Short description
Thor: Ragnarok follows the Asgardian god Thor, who is stranded on the far side of the universe without his hammer and held captive on the planet Sakaar. There he is forced into gladiatorial combat and comes face to face with his former ally, the Hulk. Meanwhile, the ruthless Hela has broken free after a long imprisonment and seizes power on Asgard, threatening to bring about Ragnarok, the destruction of Thor's home world and the end of its civilization. Thor races to return home and stop her.
The film is directed by Taika Waititi, his fifth feature after Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the short Team Thor, and the second time he worked on a Marvel project. Craig Kyle, Christopher L. Yost and Eric Pearson wrote the screenplay, and Kevin Feige produced it for Marvel Studios. Chris Hemsworth leads a large cast as Thor, with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. It runs 131 minutes.
Made for about 180 million dollars, the film took roughly 855 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for Marvel Studios. On IMDb it holds 7.9 out of 10 from around 889,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 out of 10 from over 22,000 votes, while critics rated it 7.6 out of 10 across 438 reviews, so audiences and reviewers are closely aligned. Waititi went on to direct Jojo Rabbit and later returned to the character with Thor: Love and Thunder.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Tom Hiddleston, the actor who played Loki, the knife-throwing trick occurred entirely by accident. The camera was still rolling, and he didn't want to just stand there doing nothing, so he tossed the knives up and caught them.
- This is the first Thor film without Jane Foster and her team. Their absence angered many fans of the romantic storyline between Thor and Jane, and the comedic duo of Darcy and Erik Selvig.
- The events of the film "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) take place after the events depicted in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015).
- Initially, Sir Anthony Hopkins refused to reprise his role as Odin, but after reading the film's script, he changed his mind.
- Originally, the meeting of the characters played by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Cate Blanchett was intended to take place in New York, but director Taika Waititi ordered it to be reshot in fields in Norway. The scene in New York was initially filmed in Brisbane, Australia, and can be seen in the film's trailer.

- This is the third time Sam Neill and Samuel L. Jackson have appeared in the same cinematic universe, but their characters' paths have never crossed. - At the very beginning of the project, rumors circulated that, like the film "Thor" (2011), "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) would be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Producer Kevin Feige consistently denied these rumors.
- Cate Blanchett accepted the offer to participate in the project at the urging of her children, who are fans of Marvel comics. One of her sons, Ignatius Martin Upton, even secured a cameo in the film.

- Before the sets of the science fiction action film 'Doctor Strange' (Scott Derrickson, 2016) were dismantled, the director of 'Thor: Ragnarok' Taika Waititi used them to film a scene specifically written and incorporated into the plot showing the meeting of Thor and Doctor Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch in Derrickson's film). It was decided that this scene would establish Doctor Strange as a character within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and therefore it was shown during the post-credits sequence of Derrickson's film.
