Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his home-world and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of a powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela.

- Jamie Alexander stated in an interview that she would not appear in the film as Sif due to her commitment to filming the television series "Blindspot" (2015).
- This is Mark Ruffalo's third portrayal of Bruce Banner/Hulk in a feature film. Ruffalo is the only actor to have played the role this many times. Furthermore, his contract with Marvel Studios reserves the character for him in all future Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as long as the studio retains the rights.
- Ruben Fleischer, Rob Letterman, and Rawson Marshall Thurber were considered as directors.
- To reprise his role as the mighty Thor, Chris Hemsworth had to follow a strict diet, visit the gym 6-7 times a week, and consume about 6000 calories a day. As a result, the actor gained about 10 kg of muscle mass, and his weight exceeded 90 kg.
