Set in a small Oklahoma town during the 1960s, To the Stars follows Iris Deerborne, a shy farmer's daughter who endures bullying at school and a difficult home life. Her circumstances shift when Maggie Richmond, a confident and worldly new student, arrives and the two form a close friendship. Maggie encourages Iris to stand up for herself, but Maggie's troubled past comes to light and unsettles the community, testing the bond between the two girls.
The film is Martha Stephens's second feature, following Land Ho! in 2014. Shannon Bradley-Colleary wrote the screenplay, and Kara Hayward and Liana Liberato lead the cast as Iris and Maggie. Malin Åkerman, Shea Whigham, Tony Hale and Lucas Jade Zumann appear in supporting roles. It was produced by Stacy Jorgensen, Erik Rommesmo and Laura D. Smith, with Northern Lights Films, Foton Pictures, Rockhill Studios and Prowess Pictures among the production companies.
To the Stars runs 109 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 2,200 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 6.6 from 61 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
