Set in Tokyo in 1989, Earthquake Bird follows Lucy Fly, a translator living far from her native country. She becomes involved with Teiji, a local photographer, and the relationship grows intense. When Lily Bridges, a more trusting newcomer, enters their circle, the balance between the three shifts, and Lucy's composure begins to give way. Lily then disappears and is presumed dead, leaving Lucy as the chief suspect. The story moves through her troubled past and her uncertain grasp of what has happened.
Wash Westmoreland directed and wrote the screenplay, his fourth feature after The Fluffer, Still Alice and Colette. Alicia Vikander plays Lucy, with Riley Keough as Lily, Naoki Kobayashi as Teiji and Ken Yamamura as Det. Oguchi. Ridley Scott is among the producers, and the film was made in the United States and Japan.
On IMDb the film holds 6 out of 10 from more than fifteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from roughly five hundred. A critics' rating of 5.5 from about forty reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than above them, suggesting a muted response across the board. Running just under two hours, it mixes drama, mystery, romance and thriller elements.
