The Laundromat
Short description
The Laundromat follows a widow whose insurance payout is stolen from her. Her attempts to find out what happened lead her to two lawyers based in Panama who make a business of hiding money for wealthy clients. What begins as one woman's search for answers widens into a look at the offshore financial system and the people who profit from it. The film is a comedy-drama with crime elements, based on real events surrounding the Panama Papers, the leaked documents that exposed how offshore accounts were used by powerful figures around the world.
Steven Soderbergh directed, working from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns. It is the twenty-sixth film Soderbergh directed in chronological order, coming after Unsane and before High Flying Bird. Meryl Streep plays Ellen Martin, with Gary Oldman as Jürgen Mossack, Antonio Banderas as Ramón Fonseca, and supporting turns from Jeffrey Wright, Melissa Rauch and Jeff Michalski. The production involved 65 credited cast members and 118 credited crew, and runs 96 minutes.
The film was released in September 2019. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from nearly 54,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from over 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 177 reviews places it below both audience scores, indicating a more mixed response from reviewers than from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Gary Oldman worked on his German accent by listening to recordings of German stand-up comedian Henning Wehn.
- The film is based on a book by screenwriter Jake Bernstein, which reveals the story of the leak of the so-called "Panama Papers" and presents a broad picture of political and financial corruption and machinations.
- "Netflix" showed interest in the project when it became known that Meryl Streep would be starring in it. There are very few films with her participation on this platform. Incidentally, Streep's presence in the cast also had a very positive effect on the project's funding.
- It took Steven Soderbergh three years to prepare for filming.
