Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
Short description
A group of chickens who once escaped a farm run by a cruel owner now live safely on an island with no humans, until a new danger appears. A nearby farm is hatching something suspicious, and the flock bands together to protect their kind from it.
The film is a British stop-motion animated adventure directed by Sam Fell, released in December 2023. It follows his earlier features Flushed Away, The Tale of Despereaux and ParaNorman. Rachel Tunnard, Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell wrote the screenplay, and Steve Pegram and Leyla Hobart produced it for Aardman and Netflix Animation. The voice cast includes Thandiwe Newton as Ginger, Zachary Levi as Rocky, Bella Ramsey as Molly, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, Lynn Ferguson as Mac and David Bradley as Fowler, with 46 credited cast members and 57 credited crew.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from around 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from roughly 944 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 116 reviews places it slightly above the IMDb audience score but below the TMDB figure. Running 101 minutes, it is a family-oriented adventure comedy and a sequel to an earlier film about the same flock.
What's left behind the scenes
- Nut shells were used to create the road surface, and the soil in the chicken village was made from recycled Leyland cypress leaves grown near the studio building.
- A total of 119 sets were created for the film, as well as 130 animated props, including a corn conveyor and a windmill.
- 75 kg of popcorn was used in the scene with the missile silo.
- To prevent the chickens from shining in the frame, the surface of each puppet was carefully dusted with the finest sugar icing.
- The film consists of 1,400 frames, and only 28 of them were entirely the product of computer technology. The longest shot at the beginning of the film (showing the island) included 284 frames and lasted 32.67 seconds, taking 80 working days to create.
- In the first film, no one paid attention to the chickens' dirty paws because the action took place on a farm. Here, in the artificial environment of the island, the chickens' paws had to be kept clean, which director Sam Fell specifically insisted upon.
- Over 100,000 storyboards were created for the film, taking into account all possible plot lines and their development.
