A Quiet Place Part II
Short description
A Quiet Place Part II continues the story of the Abbott family after the events that drove them from their home. Evelyn Abbott is now raising her children alone: Regan, Marcus and a newborn baby. The creatures that hunt by sound remain a constant danger, and any noise can mean death, so the family must keep silent as they leave the place they knew and head into unfamiliar territory. Along the way they encounter Emmett, someone they knew before, and they discover that the sound-sensitive creatures are not the only threat waiting for them outside. Regan, who is deaf, becomes determined to follow a signal that may lead to other survivors.
John Krasinski wrote and directed the film, his third feature after The Hollars and A Quiet Place, and he also appears as Lee Abbott. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles, with Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou joining the cast. Michael Bay and Andrew Form produced alongside Krasinski.
Released in 2021, the film had a budget of 55 million dollars and took about 297 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a horror sequel released during a period of disrupted cinema attendance. Reception was favorable: it holds a 7.2 rating on IMDb from roughly 320,000 votes and a 7.4 on TMDB from around 7,600 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.5 from 367 reviews, closely in line with audience opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- Emily Blunt admitted that she initially didn't plan to participate in the project, believing it was unlikely to live up to the level of the first 2018 film. However, she agreed to join the cast when John Krasinski told her about the bus scene. According to the actress, the first take of this scene was used in the film because the stunt frightened her greatly – the bus was rushing towards her at a speed of 64 kilometers per hour.
- The screenwriters of the first film, Scott Beck and Brian Woods, declined to work on the sequel to focus on several new projects.
- The film premiered in New York on March 8, 2020. The worldwide release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- According to John Krasinski, he initially didn't want to work on a sequel, but the producers persuaded him to share ideas for a continuation with the studio. Krasinski did so, and three weeks later he was asked to write the script, with assurances that he would not direct. Eventually, Krasinski stated that he agreed to direct the project.
- To continuously play the song “Beyond the Sea” in the radio station, a Technics SP-10 MKII vinyl record player is used, which does not have an auto-repeat function.
- When John Krasinski agreed to work on the sequel, he wrote the first draft of the script in three and a half weeks.
- Brian Tyree Henry was supposed to star in the film, but turned down the role due to commitments to other projects. Djimon Hounsou replaced him once filming had already begun.
- The film was shot in 47 days. Filming took place from June to September 2019.
- Development of the sequel began immediately after the opening weekend of the first film.
