Finch

Finch is set on a devastated Earth where the title character, an inventor and robotics engineer, is among the last people alive. Knowing his time is running short, he builds a robot whose purpose is to look after his dog once he is gone. The robot is newly made and knows nothing about the world, so Finch must teach it how to care for another living creature, and along the way the machine begins to grasp ideas like friendship, trust and what it means to behave like a person. The film's central tension lies in Finch's failing health and the race to prepare his creation before he can no longer guide it, as the three of them set out across the ruined country in search of somewhere safe to live.

The film was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, following his 2010 feature Repo Men, from a screenplay by Ivor Powell and Craig Luck. Tom Hanks plays Finch, with Caleb Landry Jones providing the voice of the robot, Jeff, and smaller flashback parts filled by Oscar Avila, Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Marie Wagenman and Emily Jones. It was produced through Amblin Entertainment, Walden Media, ImageMovers and Misher Films, on a reported budget of 3 million dollars, a modest figure that the premise's single setting and small cast help accommodate.

Audience response has been warmer than the critical one. On IMDb it holds 6.9 from around 111,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.8 from a much smaller pool of roughly 4,200, and a film critics' rating of 6.5 from 174 reviews places it close to the IMDb figure but below the TMDB score.
