Short description
Hercules in New York follows the demigod son of Zeus, who grows tired of life on Mount Olympus and wants to visit Earth. After a quarrel with his father, he ends up in New York City instead of enjoying a planned holiday. Adjusting to the modern world proves difficult for someone raised in ancient Greece, and his unfamiliarity with contemporary life causes trouble until a young woman, the daughter of a professor, helps him find his footing. His strength soon draws attention, and he becomes a success as a professional wrestler, a career that brings him into contact with criminals.
The film was directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman, the first of five features listed in his filmography, and was written and produced by Aubrey Wisberg. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Hercules in an early screen role, with Arnold Stang as Pretzie and Deborah Loomis as Helen Camden. Ernest Graves plays Zeus, Tanny McDonald plays Juno, and James Karen appears as Professor Camden, among a credited cast of 22.
Released in early 1970, the film runs 92 minutes and blends adventure, comedy and fantasy. It received a critics' rating of 2.6 out of 10 from seven reviews, while audiences on IMDb rate it 3.3 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes and on TMDB 4.1 out of 10 from over 360 votes, indicating a generally poor reception across both professional and viewer assessments.
