Julia, a woman losing her sight to a degenerative eye disease, is told that her blind twin sister Sara has taken her own life in the basement of the house where she lived alone. The police treat the death as a suicide, reasoning that Sara could not face going completely blind. Julia, whose own vision is failing, does not accept that account and begins looking into the months before her sister died, questioning the people Sara knew and following a trail toward a clinic. Her husband Isaac is among those who doubt her, and the closer she comes to the truth, the less she can see.
Guillem Morales directed and co-wrote the film with Oriol Paulo; it was Morales's first feature, followed years later by The Miniaturist and The Wasp. Guillermo del Toro was among the producers. Belén Rueda plays both sisters, with Lluís Homar as Isaac, Pablo Derqui as Ángel, Francesc Orella as Inspector Dimas, Joan Dalmau and Julia Gutiérrez Caba in supporting roles.
Released in 2010, the Spanish-Belgian-American production cost about 5 million dollars and took roughly 17 million worldwide. It holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from around 39,000 votes and the same 6.7 on TMDB from far fewer, while a critics' rating of 6.5 from 39 reviews is close to those audience scores.
