Short description

Gertrude Lawrence rises to stage stardom at the cost of happiness.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the life story of actress Gertrude Lawrence, known for her extravagant musical numbers featuring dancing and singing.
  • Cartier provided jewelry worth 1,250 pounds sterling for the film, which remained under constant guard by the Pinkerton agency.
  • The film was the result of Twentieth Century Fox's attempt to replicate the success of Robert Wise's (1914-2005) musical 'The Sound of Music' (1965) by releasing three expensive, large-scale projects: 'Star!', Richard Fleischer's (1916-2006) 'Doctor Dolittle' (1967), and Gene Kelly's (1912-1996) 'Hello, Dolly!' (1969). Unfortunately, public tastes had already begun to shift, as evidenced by the box office returns of all three films. Consequently, several high-ranking studio executives lost their jobs, and the company found itself in such a difficult financial position that it released only one film in 1970.
  • A total of 3,040 costumes were created for the shoot, costing the filmmakers £315,000. Julie Andrews alone wore 125 different costumes (including 96 evening gowns) with a total value of £144,500.
  • The film was shot over 149 filming days.
  • The final shot number on the clapperboard was 1417, which was close to a record for musicals. Julie Andrews appeared in 1,306 shots, which was already a record number.
