Brittany Forgler, 27 and living in New York, is sociable and funny with everyone except herself. Nights out, unstable work and bad relationships have left her feeling adrift, and a doctor's visit delivers an unwelcome verdict about her health. Told she needs to lose weight but without the money for a gym or the willingness to ask for help, she takes up her neighbour Catherine's suggestion and starts running around the block. The habit grows into a serious ambition: training for the New York City Marathon, an effort that forces her to reconsider her job, her friendships and how she treats herself.
Paul Downs Colaizzo wrote and directed the film, his first as director, with Tobey Maguire, Margot Hand and Matthew Plouffe producing. Jillian Bell leads as Brittany, supported by Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, Micah Stock and Alice Lee.
Released in August 2019, the comedy-drama runs 103 minutes. It earned roughly 7 million dollars worldwide, a modest return on a small production. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from about 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from around 519 votes, while critics gave it 7.4 from 191 reviews, a warmer reception than either audience score suggests.
