The Tax Collector

The Tax Collector is an American crime drama about David Cuevas, a family man in Los Angeles who works as a collector of gang taxes for a crime boss known as Wizard. Alongside his partner Creeper, David moves through the city gathering what local gangs owe, making sure the money arrives or that those who hold back face the consequences. When an old rival of Wizard returns to Los Angeles from Mexico, the operation is thrown into disorder, and David finds everything he cares about, above all his family, placed at risk.

David Ayer directed and wrote the film, which followed Bright (2017) in his filmography and runs 95 minutes. Bobby Soto plays David, with Shia LaBeouf as Creeper, Cinthya Carmona as Alexis, George López as Uncle Louis, Elpidia Carrillo as Janet and Lana Parrilla as Favi. The production, backed by Cross Creek Pictures, Cedar Park Entertainment, Faster Horse Pictures and Kodiak Pictures, carried a budget of 30 million US dollars.

The film was released in August 2020 and took about 1 million US dollars worldwide, a small fraction of its cost. On IMDb it holds 4.9 out of 10 from roughly 17,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from around 571 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 69 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
