Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona is a documentary about the Argentine footballer whose talents made him one of the most celebrated players of his generation and whose personal life brought him as much notoriety as his play. The film follows his rise from humble beginnings in Buenos Aires to stardom in his home country, then to a difficult spell in Barcelona, and finally to Naples, where he joined SSC Napoli in 1984. The move to a struggling club looked like a step down, but the team's supporters embraced him, and over seven years he led Napoli to domestic and international success. The same period saw his private life unravel, and he came to feel trapped by the city that had made him a hero.

The documentary is assembled from more than 500 hours of previously unseen footage. Asif Kapadia directs, working from a career that includes Senna, his 2010 film, and Amy, released in 2015, and followed here by Creature in 2023 and further films. Paul Martin and James Gay-Rees produced, and the cast includes Diego Maradona himself and his daughter Dalma, alongside figures such as Pelé appearing in archive material and journalists and coaches contributing.

Released in 2019, the film runs 130 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 7.7 rating on IMDb from around 19,000 votes and a 7.4 on TMDB from roughly 450 votes, while critics gave it 7.7 from 86 reviews.
