Short description
tick, tick... BOOM! centers on Jonathan Larson, a theatre composer approaching his thirtieth birthday in New York City in 1990. He supports himself with shifts at a diner while writing a musical he believes could reach Broadway, and the approach of a workshop presentation puts him under growing strain. His girlfriend, Susan, has tired of waiting for his career to take off, while his friend Michael has set aside his own creative ambitions for a steady job in advertising. Around him, Jon moves through an artistic community shaped by the AIDS epidemic, weighing whether the path he has chosen will ever repay the years he has given it.
The film is Lin-Manuel Miranda's first outing as a director, made after his work as a composer and performer on stage and screen, and it draws on Larson's own life and stage show. Steven Levenson wrote the screenplay with Larson credited as well; Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Miranda produced through Imagine Entertainment and 5000 Broadway Productions. Andrew Garfield plays Larson, with Alexandra Shipp as Susan, Robin de Jesús as Michael, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez as Carolyn, Ben Levi Ross as Freddy and Jonathan Marc Sherman as Ira Weitzman, among a credited cast of 130 and crew of 95. On IMDb it holds 7.5 from about 128,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from roughly 2,400, while its critics' rating stands at 7.6 from 223 reviews.

- The real Jonathan Larson received three posthumous Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for the rock musical "Rent".
- The prototype for Michael, who has HIV, played by Robin de Jesus, was a man named Matthew O'Grady, who was, fortunately, still alive in 2021.
