Short description
Bohemian Rhapsody follows Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon from their early days in London to the heights of global fame as Queen. The film traces how the band came together around 1970, when a young art student named Farrokh Bulsara joined an existing group and took the name Freddie Mercury, and how their distinctive sound and string of hit songs made them one of the biggest acts in rock. As success grows, Mercury's personal life and his struggle to reconcile who he is with the world around him put pressure on the band, and the members must find a way to hold together.
Bryan Singer directed the film, which was written by Anthony McCarten and produced by Graham King and Robert De Niro, among others. It sits in the middle of Singer's filmography, between X-Men: Apocalypse and Monument, and it draws on his earlier work in large-scale studio productions. Rami Malek plays Mercury, with Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy and Joseph Mazzello as his bandmates, Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin and Aidan Gillen as John Reid, in a cast of 115 credited performers backed by 265 credited crew.
Made for a budget of 52 million dollars, the film took in roughly 904 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the most commercially successful releases of its year. On IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from 641,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 8/10 from 18,060 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.1/10 from 418 reviews sits noticeably below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Preparation for filming began in July 2017, and filming started in London in September.
- The very first scene filmed was the concert at “Wembley.” Since the 1985 “Wembley” no longer existed, an exact replica was built on an airfield north of London. When Bob Geldof and the producer of Live Aid visited the set, they were amazed by the accuracy of the reconstruction.
- When casting for the role of Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), Rami Malek sent a demo reel to the other members of Queen. When he arrived to perform live, it turned out his reel hadn’t uploaded, and the musicians hadn’t seen it, so he could now see their first reaction to his vocal and stage skills.
- In December 2017, three weeks before the end of filming, Bryan Singer requested a break because his mother was very ill. 20th Century Fox decided to fire the director and replace him with Dexter Fletcher. He took over as director for the last 14 days of filming and oversaw editing, but according to the rules of the Directors Guild of America, only Singer was credited in the titles.
- Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), but he had to leave the project due to disagreements with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. The entire film concept with Cohen in the lead role was scrapped after May expressed dissatisfaction with it being a biopic solely about Mercury, and not about the whole band.
- The official soundtrack to the film contains several Queen hits and 11 previously unreleased recordings, including five tracks from their 21-minute live performance in July 1985. It was released on compact disc, cassette, and digitally on October 19, 2018, by Hollywood Records.
- The film owes its title to the composition “Bohemian Rhapsody” from the album A Night at the Opera (1975), written by Freddie Mercury. The most accurate translation of the song’s title is “Bohemian Rhapsody,” not “Bohemian.”
