Tigers Are Not Tales tells the story of Estrella, a ten-year-old girl living in a Mexican city torn apart by drug-cartel violence. When her mother disappears, Estrella is left with no one to look after her and ends up joining a group of orphaned children who survive on the streets. Led by the angry El Shine, the gang becomes caught up in a conflict with criminals, and Estrella is haunted by a presence she cannot escape. The film blends drama with fantasy and horror elements as it follows the children through a brutal environment where survival comes at a cost.
The film was written and directed by Issa López, with Marco Polo Constandse producing. Paola Lara plays Estrella, alongside Juan Ramón López, Ianis Guerrero, Rodrigo Cortes, Hanssel Casillas and Nery Arredondo. Running 83 minutes, it was made in Mexico by Videocine, Peligrosa and Filmadora Nacional with a budget of 26 million USD.
Released in 2017, the film holds an IMDb rating of 6.9 from 10,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.8 from 298 votes, indicating a generally favorable audience response. A critics' rating of 8.4 from 116 reviews places it noticeably higher with reviewers than with general viewers, suggesting the film was received more strongly by professional critics than by audiences at large.
