The Water Horse
Short description
The Water Horse is a family adventure set in Scotland during the Second World War. A lonely boy named Angus MacMorrow finds a strange egg near a loch and secretly takes it home. The egg hatches into a creature of Scottish legend, and as the animal grows far faster than expected, it quickly outgrows its hiding place. Angus names it Crusoe and tries to keep it hidden, while the nearby Loch Ness becomes a possible refuge. The film balances a boy's bond with the creature against the difficulty of protecting it from people who would see it as a danger.
Directed by Jay Russell, the film follows My Dog Skip, Tuck Everlasting and Ladder 49 in his filmography and is based on a screenplay by Robert Nelson Jacobs. Alexander Nathan Etel plays Angus, with Emily Watson as his mother Anne, Ben Chaplin as Lewis Mowbray, David Morrissey as Captain Thomas Hamilton, Priyanka Xi as Kirstie MacMorrow and Craig Hall as Charlie MacMorrow.
Produced by Walden Media, Revolution Studios, Beacon Pictures and Ecosse Films, The Water Horse was released on December 25, 2007, and runs 112 minutes. It had a budget of 40 million dollars and took 104 million dollars worldwide, a solid return. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5/10 from 1,179 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The egg from which Crusoe hatched was made of plasticine, and then an entire team collected fragments of shells and corals on the beach to glue onto it.
- While filming the scene with the boot, Alex Ethel pulled the Crusoe doll so hard that its head came off.
- At the 25-minute mark, as the captain drives up to the lake, a Russian flag is clearly visible on the car – a flag that was adopted in 1993, which is much later than the events depicted in the film.
