Cyrano, My Love

In December 1897 Paris, the young playwright Edmond Rostand is struggling. Almost thirty, married with two children and short of money, he has written nothing for two years and has lost faith in his own talent. In desperation he offers the celebrated actor Constant Coquelin a new verse play for the holiday season, and Coquelin accepts and sets a premiere date. The difficulty is that the work does not yet exist beyond its title, and Rostand must produce it while managing the demands of actresses and producers, his wife's jealousy and his best friend's romantic entanglements.

This French and Belgian co-production was directed by Alexis Michalik, who also wrote the screenplay, with Alain Goldman producing. Thomas Solivérès plays Rostand opposite Olivier Gourmet as Coquelin, and the cast of forty includes Mathilde Seigner, Tom Leeb, Lucie Boujenah and Alice de Lencquesaing. The film was made for a budget of around nine million dollars and runs 113 minutes.

Its subject is the writing of the play that would become Cyrano de Bergerac, and the film mixes comedy with historical reconstruction. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 533 votes, a modest but clearly positive response from viewers.
