House of Hummingbird follows a fourteen-year-old girl named Eun-hee growing up in Seoul in 1994. At home she is largely left to herself: her parents are preoccupied with work and with their own arguments, and her older brother treats her harshly. At school she is quiet and somewhat set apart from her classmates, who talk about her behind her back. She spends much of her time wandering the neighborhood with her closest friend and exploring early romance. Her life begins to shift when she meets Young-ji, a young Chinese-language teacher who takes an interest in her and becomes the first adult to truly listen to her.
The film is the debut feature of director and screenwriter Kim Bora, who also produced it, and it marked the first leading role for Park Ji-hu as Eun-hee. Kim Sae-byuk plays Young-ji, with Seol Hye-in, Jeong In-gi, Lee Seung-yeon and Park Soo-yeon in supporting parts.
Released on 28 August 2019, the film runs 135 minutes and earned about 1 million USD worldwide, a modest figure consistent with a low-budget independent drama. Audiences rate it 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.6 out of 10 on TMDB, while its critics' rating stands at 8.2 out of 10, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than the solid audience scores.
