The Brutalist

The Brutalist follows László Tóth, a Hungarian architect who leaves post-war Europe for the United States in 1947. Hoping to rebuild his life and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet, he settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren takes an interest in his talent. The arrangement that follows reshapes both men's lives, testing how much ambition and patronage can demand.

The film is directed by Brady Corbet, who wrote the screenplay with Mona Fastvold; it is his second feature, arriving after Vox Lux. Adrien Brody plays László, with Felicity Jones as Erzsébet, Guy Pearce as Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr, Joe Alwyn as Harry Lee, Raffey Cassidy as Zsófia and Stacy Martin as Maggie Lee. It runs 215 minutes, placing it among the longer dramatic releases of its year.

Made for about 10 million dollars and taking roughly 50 million worldwide, the film was a considerable commercial success relative to its budget. Critical response was strong: critics' reviews average 8.7 out of 10 across 337 notices. Audience ratings are more measured, with 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from about 135,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from 1,821 votes.
