Short description

Echo in the Canyon is a documentary about the music that emerged from Laurel Canyon, the Los Angeles neighborhood that became a creative hub for young musicians in the mid-1960s. The film traces the roots of that scene and the groups associated with it, including The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas, while also looking at how the period shaped what followed. Jakob Dylan serves as the main guide, meeting musicians from that era and taking part in performances of their songs.

Andrew Slater directed, and he wrote the screenplay with Eric Barrett; both also produced the film. It runs 82 minutes and was released in May 2019. Alongside Dylan, the cast of interviewees and participants includes Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills and David Crosby.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 4,300 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 46 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 79 reviews places it broadly in line with the audience response on IMDb, suggesting a generally favorable but not unanimous reception.
