The Ladykillers
Short description
A Southern professor named Goldthwait Higginson Dorr assembles a crew of criminals to rob a casino housed on a riverboat. To prepare the job, the men rent rooms from Marva Munson, an elderly widow who attends church regularly, and pass themselves off as a sacred music group needing a place to rehearse. Their real plan is to dig from her cellar toward the casino vault, but the gang proves far less capable than its leader pretends, and their landlady turns out to be harder to handle than they expected.
The film is a Coen brothers production, directed by Joel Coen and written and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen with Barry Sonnenfeld. It followed their 2003 film Intolerable Cruelty as the eleventh feature in the brothers' directing careers, ahead of Paris Je T'aime in 2006. Tom Hanks plays Professor Dorr, with Irma P. Hall as Marva Munson, Marlon Wayans, J.K. Simmons, Tzi Ma and Ryan Hurst among the crew. It runs 104 minutes.
Made for about 35 million dollars, it took in roughly 77 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 112,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from a much smaller count of about 1,800. A critics' score of 6.4 out of 10 from 189 reviews places professional opinion slightly above the audience ratings.
