Short description

Black Christmas follows a group of students at Hawthorne College who stay on campus over the Christmas holidays. When a masked figure begins stalking and attacking the young women, they realize the danger is not random: the killings are tied to something organized within the university itself. Riley Stone and her friends Marty, Kris and Jesse decide to fight back rather than wait to become victims, while also having to work out which of the men around them they can trust, among them Marty's new boyfriend Nate, Riley's acquaintance Landon and Professor Gelson.

The film is a remake of the 1974 horror film of the same name. Sophia Takal directed and co-wrote the screenplay with April Wolfe, and it is the second feature she directed, between Always Shine (2016) and Act One (2026). Imogen Poots leads the cast as Riley, with Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue and Brittany O'Grady as her friends, Caleb Eberhardt as Landon and Cary Elwes as Professor Gelson. It was produced by Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures, among others, on a budget of about 5 million dollars, and it took roughly 19 million dollars worldwide.

Audience response was weak. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.5 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.6 out of 10 from roughly 618 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 115 reviews places it slightly above those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Imogen Poots agreed to participate in the film without even reading the script.
  • The design of the killer masks is based on a real torture device that existed in the Middle Ages – a mask of shame. These were forced upon talkative women or those suspected of witchcraft.
  • The initial version of the film, with an R rating, lasted 111 minutes.
