Short description
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a stop-motion animated musical set in Italy during the years between the two world wars, as fascism takes hold. A woodcarver named Geppetto, grieving the loss of his son, builds a puppet boy who is brought to life. The wooden child tries to earn his father's approval but is easily led astray, and he soon falls under the influence of a showman who sees a use for a living puppet. A cricket who took up residence in the wood from which the boy was carved accompanies him on his travels. The film is a musical, and del Toro wrote lyrics for it.
Del Toro directed with Mark Gustafson, working from a screenplay he wrote with Patrick McHale. The voice cast is led by Gregory Mann as the puppet and his father's lost son, David Bradley as Geppetto, and Ewan McGregor as the cricket, with supporting roles voiced by Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro and others among the twenty-three credited cast members. It is the twelfth of the thirteen films del Toro has directed, arriving between Nightmare Alley and Frankenstein, and it was made for a budget of 35 million dollars.
The film drew strong responses. It holds a critics' rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 298 reviews, while on IMDb it has 7.6 out of 10 from around 143,000 votes and on TMDB 8 out of 10 from roughly 3,500 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- In 2008, Guillermo del Toro announced that he was beginning work on his next project – a dark adaptation of Carlo Collodi's fairy tale "The Adventures of Pinocchio. The Story of a Wooden Puppet" (1883). On November 8, 2017, he reported problems with the project, which no one wanted to finance. On October 22, 2018, Netflix announced that del Toro would direct the animated project "Pinocchio," and del Toro confirmed the statement by posting concept art (a form of illustration used to visualize ideas and concepts) of the future project online, which echoed his own visions.
- Guillermo del Toro is originally from Mexico, but the film's release was initially banned in that country. This happened after an interview with del Toro, in which he complained about the state of the national cinema and the lack of interest shown by government officials in Mexico towards directors and actors. Eventually, the film was released in limited release in Mexico, shown in only a few cinemas.
- Cate Blanchett informed director and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro that she would like to participate in this project, starring in his 2021 thriller, “Nightmare Alley.” It was then revealed that for “Pinocchio,” del Toro only needed to find an actress to voice the monkey. To del Toro’s surprise, Blanchett immediately seized the opportunity to voice the monkey, although the animals had few lines.
