Short description

Candyman follows Anthony McCoy, a visual artist who moves with his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright, into a luxury apartment in Chicago's Cabrini Green, a neighborhood transformed by gentrification and populated largely by newcomers unaware of its past. While searching for ideas for his work, Anthony learns of the Candyman legend from a longtime local resident: a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, said to appear to anyone who speaks his name five times into a mirror. Anthony turns the story into a piece for an exhibition, and when people around him begin to die violently, his mental state deteriorates.

The film is directed by Nia DaCosta, who wrote the screenplay with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, and Peele produced it with Win Rosenfeld and Ian Cooper. It was DaCosta's first feature after her debut, Little Woods, and it precedes The Marvels, Hedda, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and Look Behind You in her filmography. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Anthony, with Teyonah Parris as Brianna, Colman Domingo as William Burke, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Troy Cartwright, Kyle Kaminsky as Grady Smith and Vanessa Williams as Anne-Marie McCoy.

Released in August 2021, the film runs 91 minutes and is a Canadian-American horror, mystery and thriller production from Universal Pictures, Bron Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Monkeypaw Productions. Made for about 25 million dollars, it earned roughly 77 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6 out of 10 from 1,837 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 335 reviews, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than from audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in the same area of Chicago (Cabrini-Green) as the original 1992 film.
  • Jordan Peele was originally set to direct, but the position went to Nia DaCosta, with Peele becoming a producer.
