James Figueras is an art critic whose career has lost its shine. Living in Milan and lecturing tourists on art history, he finds a new companion in the American Berenice Hollis. An invitation from Joseph Cassidy, a wealthy collector, takes the pair to his estate on Lake Como, where Cassidy asks James to take a painting from the studio of Jerome Debney, a celebrated artist who withdrew from public life years ago. The plan comes apart as James's ambition and insecurity take over.
Giuseppe Capotondi directed the film, from a screenplay by Scott B. Smith. It is Capotondi's second feature, following his 2009 debut, and it adapts Charles Willeford's novel. Claes Bang leads as James, with Elizabeth Debicki as Berenice. Mick Jagger plays Cassidy and Donald Sutherland plays Debney, supported by Rosalind Halstead and Alessandro Fabrizio.
Released in March 2020, the Italy-United States co-production runs 99 minutes and mixes crime, mystery and thriller elements. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 6,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from about 197 votes, a modest showing from a smaller sample. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 120 reviews places professional assessment slightly above the audience scores.
