Short description
Tom Clancy's Without Remorse follows John Kelly, a senior chief in the Navy SEALs, whose life is shattered when his pregnant wife is killed. After surviving the attack himself, Kelly sets out to find those responsible. What begins as a personal pursuit of the killers widens into something larger, as he and a fellow SEAL operator and a CIA officer uncover a conspiracy that reaches across international lines and raises the prospect of open conflict between the United States and Russia. The film serves as an origin story for John Clark, a character from Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels.
Michael B. Jordan plays Kelly, with Jamie Bell, Guy Pearce, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lauren London and Brett Gelman among the credited cast. Stefano Sollima directed, working from a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples. It is the fourth feature Sollima directed, arriving between Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Adagio.
Released in April 2021, the film runs 110 minutes and belongs to the action, adventure, thriller and war genres. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9/10 from roughly 2,800 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 192 reviews places it below both audience scores, indicating a mixed critical reception relative to viewer opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- Work on the film adaptation of the novel of the same name (1993) by Tom Clancy began back in the 1990s. In 1994, Keanu Reeves was offered the role of John Clark for $7 million, but the actor declined. In 1995, Savoy Pictures shut down the project during pre-production, with Laurence Fishburne and Gary Sinise planned to participate. In 2012, Christopher McQuarrie became the film's director, and Paramount Pictures took over the project. Negotiations were held with Tom Hardy, who was to play John Clark, and with Kevin Costner, who was planned to be cast as William Harper. In September 2018, it was announced that Michael B. Jordan would play Clark, and that it would be a two-part film series based on the novels 'Without Remorse' (1993) and 'Rainbow Six' (1998). In December of the same year, it became known that Stefano Sollima would direct, and filming began in Berlin in October 2019.
