Short description

Extreme Job follows a police drug squad whose record is so poor that its future is in doubt. When a lead points to an international drug ring, the officers stake out a chicken restaurant across the street, only to learn that the gang regularly orders delivery from it. With the restaurant about to close, the squad buys the place and runs it undercover, using it as a base for surveillance. Their fried chicken then becomes a local sensation, drawing media attention that threatens both the operation and the criminals' cover.

Lee Byeong-heon directed the film, his third feature after Twenty (2015) and What a Man Wants (2018), from a screenplay by Moon Chung-il. Ryu Seung-ryong leads the cast as Squad Chief Go, alongside Honey Lee, Jin Sun-kyu, Lee Dong-hwi, Gong Myeong and Shin Ha-kyun.

Released in January 2019, the Korean production was made for about 8 million USD and went on to earn roughly 125 million USD worldwide, a return far beyond its modest budget. On IMDb it holds a 7.1/10 from around 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2/10 from about 370 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2/10 from 12 reviews places it above those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Chin Sun-kyu spent several weeks learning to fry chicken wings to look convincing on screen.
  • The film became the highest-grossing film in South Korea of all time, breaking the record previously held by "The Front Line".
