Gantz

Two teenage friends, Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, reunite by chance at a Tokyo subway station and try to help a drunk man who has fallen onto the tracks. An express train hits them, but instead of dying they wake in an ordinary apartment with a view over the city, joined by others who have just died. The only furniture is a large black sphere called Gantz, and the doors and windows will not open. The sphere forces them into a lethal mission: hunt down and eliminate aliens living among people. Adapted from the manga of the same name, this Japanese production blends action, horror and science fiction.

Shinsuke Sato directs from a screenplay by Yusuke Watanabe, with Kazunari Ninomiya and Kenichi Matsuyama leading a credited cast of thirty-six that includes Kanata Hongo and Natsuna Watanabe. The film runs 130 minutes and was released in late 2010. It is the first in the director's filmography and the earliest of his several manga and anime adaptations, among them I Am a Hero, Bleach and Inuyashiki, followed by the Kingdom series; its sequel, Gantz: Perfect Answer, came the following year.

Audience response sits at a moderate level, with a rating of 6.4 from roughly 8,700 votes on IMDb and 6.6 from 353 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 192 reviews places professional appraisal slightly below the audience scores. The film was produced by TOHO, Shueisha, Nikkatsu and Nippon Television Network.
