Fat Girl

Released in 2001, Fat Girl follows two sisters on a seaside holiday with their parents in France. Anaïs is twelve, self-conscious about her weight and quietly observant; her sister Elena is fifteen and strikingly pretty. The two share little beyond their circumstances, and Anaïs watches as Elena begins a flirtation with Fernando, an Italian law student they meet at a café. What starts as a summer romance becomes something more troubling, and Anaïs is drawn into the orbit of her sister's experience in ways she cannot control. Catherine Breillat wrote and directed the film, which sits between her 1999 film Romance and her 2004 film Anatomy of Hell in her directing career.

The cast includes Anaïs Reboux as Anaïs Pingot, Roxane Mesquida as Elena Pingot, Libero De Rienzo as Fernando, Arsinée Khanjian as the girls' mother and Laura Betti as Fernando's mother. Breillat's screenplay focuses on the sisters' relationship and the unequal ways they encounter desire and attention.
