Maya, who was raised by an aunt and knows little about her parents, travels from the city to the remote village where she was born after learning she has inherited a house there. Her friend Dini comes with her. The villagers have their own reasons for wanting Maya found, and those reasons turn deadly: the community has long sought to end a curse that has afflicted it, and killing her is part of that effort. Maya has no idea what awaits her.
Joko Anwar directed and wrote the film, his fifth feature, following the 2017 horror film Satan's Slaves and the 2019 superhero film Gundala. Tara Basro plays Maya, with Marissa Anita as Dini, Asmara Abigail as Ratih, Christine Hakim as Misni, Ario Bayu as Saptadi and Faradina Mufti as Shinta among a credited cast of 45. The film runs 106 minutes and was released in October 2019.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 9,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 250 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 38 reviews places it above both audience scores, though the gap is modest. The film was an Indonesian, American and Korean co-production involving CJ Entertainment, Ivanhoe Pictures, Rapi Films and BASE Entertainment.
