An Easy Girl

Naïma has just turned sixteen and lives with her mother in modest circumstances in Cannes. With school behind her and no clear idea of what comes next, she faces a long, hot summer before work and adult life begin. Her older cousin Sofia, twenty-two, arrives from Paris after her own mother's death and takes Naïma under her wing. Worldly and seemingly cynical where Naïma is inexperienced, Sofia draws her into a summer of encounters and parties, including the attention of a wealthy yacht owner. Naïma's best friend Dodo warns her, but she follows Sofia anyway, and the season changes both cousins.

Rebecca Zlotowski directed and co-wrote the film with Teddy Lussi-Modeste; Frédéric Jouve produced it for France 3 Cinéma and Les Films Velvet. It is the fourth feature Zlotowski directed, arriving between Planetarium and Other People's Children in a filmography that begins with Belle épine and Grand Central. Mina Farid plays Naïma, with Zahia Dehar as Sofia, Benoît Magimel as Philippe, Nuno Lopes as Andres, Clotilde Courau as Calypso and Lakdhar Dridi as Dodo, among twenty-one credited cast members. Running ninety-two minutes, the French comedy-drama was released in August 2019.

Critical notices were considerably warmer than audience responses: a critics' rating of 7.3/10 from twenty-two reviews stands against 5.6/10 on IMDb from around 6,700 votes and 5.5/10 on TMDB from roughly 380 votes.
