The Lovebirds

The Lovebirds centers on a couple whose relationship is already falling apart when they become caught up in a murder investigation. Leilani and Jibran, on a trip to New Orleans, find themselves treated as suspects and have to work together to identify the real killer and clear their names. Their attempts to solve the case keep landing them in increasingly chaotic situations, and all the while they have to decide whether their relationship can survive the night.

Michael Showalter directed the film, working from a screenplay by Aaron Abrams, Martin Gero and Brendan Gall, with Tom Lassally, Martin Gero and Jordana Mollick producing. It followed his earlier features Hello, My Name Is Doris and The Big Sick, and came before The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Spoiler Alert, The Idea of You, Oh. What. Fun. and Verity. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani lead the cast as Leilani and Jibran, with Paul Sparks, Anna Camp, Nicholas X. Parsons and Kyle Bornheimer among the supporting players.

Released in May 2020 and running 87 minutes, the film mixes action, comedy and romance. Its ratings sit in the middle range: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it also has 6.1 out of 10, from roughly 741 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 179 reviews places professional response broadly in line with how audiences scored it.
