Eleven-year-old Amy lives with her mother and younger brother while the family awaits her father's return from Senegal. Raised with traditional expectations, she is drawn instead to a free-spirited dance group at her school, led by a girl named Angelica. After being rejected at first, Amy works her way into the group and begins exploring a sensual style of dance, unsettling her mother and the values she has been taught. The film follows the tension between Amy's desire to belong and the life her family intends for her.
