Short description
Brian O'Conner lost his badge after letting a target go in Los Angeles, and with his police career over he has settled in Miami. When federal agents struggle to build a case against Carter Verone, a businessman they suspect of laundering money for an international operation, they offer Brian a way back in. He agrees to work undercover as a driver for Verone, on the condition that his childhood friend Roman Pearce, an ex-convict with a taste for fast cars, joins him. Roman is not told that Brian is reporting to the authorities, and the two are to transport a shipment of money while secretly gathering evidence with undercover agent Monica Fuentes, who is already inside Verone's circle.
The film is directed by John Singleton, whose earlier features include Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Rosewood, Shaft and Baby Boy, placing it seventh in the run of nine titles listed for him. Paul Walker returns as Brian, with Tyrese Gibson as Roman, Eva Mendes as Monica, Cole Hauser as Verone, and Ludacris and James Remar among the credited cast of 31. It was made for about 76 million dollars and took roughly 236 million worldwide, a strong return.
On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 322,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from over 8,000. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 160 reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- It wasn't until after filming had begun that it became clear Devon Aoki had neither a license nor any driving experience.
- The racer Suki's name is originally Suki, which can be translated from Japanese as 'love'.
- Filming of the movie began on September 9, 2002, in Miami.
- After filming the movie, Paul Walker received a Nissan Skyline GT-R as a gift, which was featured at the beginning of the film.
- A scene was cut from the film showing Brian moving from Los Angeles to Miami. This scene showed O'Connor buying a Nissan Skyline GT-R, which he uses in the film's first race.
- The main star of the first "Fast & Furious" film, Vin Diesel, left the project after requesting a very large fee (over $20 million). Accordingly, due to Diesel's absence, director Rob Cohen refused to direct the sequel.
