Short description

The Yankee Pedlar Inn is days away from closing for good. Only two staff members remain: Claire, who has settled into a life that seems to be going nowhere, and Luke, a solitary computer enthusiast. Both are convinced the hotel is haunted and intend to use their last weekend on the job to prove it. As the final guests arrive, including a former television actress who now claims psychic abilities and an elderly man who insists on staying in room 353, strange occurrences become harder to explain away, and the pair must decide what to believe.

Ti West wrote and directed the film, his fifth feature in a run of thirteen. It came after his segment in V/H/S and before his contribution to The ABCs of Death. Larry Fessenden and Derek Curl produced alongside West for Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films. Sara Paxton plays Claire and Pat Healy plays Luke, with Kelly McGillis as Leanne Jones, George Riddle as the old man, and Lena Dunham in a small role as a barista.

Released in early 2012, the horror thriller runs 101 minutes. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 39,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.4 from far fewer votes; a critics' rating of 6.7 from 118 reviews is noticeably higher than either audience figure.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the scene where Pat Healy’s character shows Sarah Paxton’s character a video recording, the actress appears genuinely shocked. Paxton wasn’t acting scared; she was truly frightened because she had never seen the recording before. The scene was filmed in one take. When recording commentary for the film, the actress was shown the recording again, and she flinched once more.
  • Director Taye West disliked the color of Claire’s inhaler, as portrayed by Sarah Paxton, which the props department had purchased. However, the inhaler contained breath freshener, so it could be used on camera.
  • Filming of the movie took 17 days.
  • Luke's old underwear, played by Pat Healy, belonged to the actor himself. Shortly before filming began, he lost weight and brought his old undergarments with him. The scene where Sarah Paxton's character wakes up Luke had to be filmed several times because the actress couldn't help but laugh at the sight of Healy in such unpresentable attire.
  • Filming took place at the actual Yankee Pedlar Inn in Torrington, Connecticut. The actors and crew also stayed there during filming.
  • It is claimed that the Yankee Pedlar Inn is genuinely haunted. Some members of the crew complained of experiencing certain inexplicable phenomena while staying at the hotel.
