Come to Daddy
Short description
Norval Greenwood has had little contact with his father for three decades, so a letter inviting him to visit comes as a surprise. He travels to the man's isolated oceanfront house, hoping for a reconciliation and some explanation for the way he and his mother were left behind. The reunion is awkward from the start, and Norval comes to suspect that his father's reasons for reaching out are not what they seem.
Ant Timpson directed Come to Daddy, his first feature, from a screenplay by Toby Harvard. Timpson went on to direct Bookworm in 2024. Elijah Wood plays Norval, with Stephen McHattie as Gordon, Michael Smiley as Jethro, Madeleine Sami as Gladys, Martin Donovan as Brian and Ona Grauer as Precious. The film runs 96 minutes and blends comedy with horror, mystery and thriller elements. It was made as a co-production between Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 600 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 103 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores. The larger IMDb sample suggests a modest, mixed response from viewers rather than strong enthusiasm.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Anton Thompson came up with the idea for the film when his father died, and his father's business partner arranged for the embalmed body to remain in the house in an open casket for another week.
- During filming, both Ant Thompson and Elijah Wood sustained injuries. For some time afterward, Thompson had to oversee the filming process without leaving the director's chair.
