After Midnight centers on Hank, whose girlfriend Abby leaves him after years together, offering little explanation for her departure. His heartbreak coincides with a terrifying problem: a creature comes to his house night after night, scratching at the door and trying to force its way in. Hank's attempts to deal with the intruder become tangled up with his grief over the relationship and his struggle to understand what went wrong between them. The film blends drama, horror and romance, following a man pulled between a personal loss he cannot process and a threat he cannot ignore.
The film was directed by Christian Stella and Jeremy Gardner, who also wrote the screenplay and stars as Hank. It is Gardner's second directorial credit, following The Battery. The supporting cast includes Brea Grant as Abby, Henry Zebrowski as Wade, Taylor Zaudtke as Jade and Justin Benson as Shane. Justin Benson, David Lawson Jr. and Aaron Moorhead served as producers. The film runs 83 minutes and was released in the United States in 2019.
Audience reception was modest, with a 5.4 rating from about 5,400 votes on IMDb and 5.7 from 138 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 40 reviews is noticeably higher than those audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded more favorably to the film's mixture of relationship drama and monster story than general viewers did.
