Mars Express
Short description
Set in the year 2200, this story follows private investigator Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera. Hired by a wealthy businessman, the pair searches for a hacker and a missing cybernetics student named Jun Chow. Their investigation leads them into the depths of the Martian capital, where they encounter corporate corruption, brain farms, and a secret regarding robot programming that could impact the entire universe.
Directed by Jérémie Périn, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Laurent Sarfati, the French production features the voices of Léa Drucker, Mathieu Amalric, and Daniel Njo Lobé. The film was produced by France 3 Cinéma, MK2 Films, Gébéka Films, and Everybody on Deck. With a budget of 8 million USD, the movie earned 1 million USD at the worldwide box office.
The film is well-received by audiences and critics. It holds a 7.5/10 rating on IMDb based on 14,000 votes and a 7.5/10 rating on TMDB from 591 votes. Film critics provided a slightly higher rating of 7.8/10 across 28 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sometimes the cartoon shows an intersection of three roads, named Suzuki, Hulsbeck, and Chahi. This is a reference to Yu Suzuki, Chris Hulsbeck, and Eric Chahi – well-known figures in the gaming industry. The hacker is named Roberta Williams, which is a reference to another key figure in the field of computer games.
- This is director Jérémy Perrin's feature film debut. Previously, he only directed individual episodes of the animated series "The Last Man" (2016-2022). In 2018, producer Didier Crest approached Perrin and Laurent Sarfati (the screenwriter and creator of "The Last Man") and suggested they consider creating a film based on the animated series. Perrin and Sarfati convinced him to try his hand at an original neonoir animated science fiction film. He was captivated by the idea, found funding for the project, and eventually "Mars Express" saw the light of day.
