Set during the First World War, Britannic follows Vera Campbell, a British intelligence agent who boards the ocean liner Britannic under the cover of working as a governess for Lady Lewis and her children. Her assignment is to track down a German spy believed to be plotting sabotage on board. As she carries out her search, she grows close to Reynolds, the ship's chaplain, and the two develop feelings for each other even though both are keeping secrets. The Britannic, sister ship to the Titanic, is serving as a hospital ship, and its voyage comes under threat.
Brian Trenchard-Smith directed the television film from a screenplay he wrote with Kim Owen Smith and Brett Thompson. It was his seventh film as director, following Leprechaun 4: In Space and preceding Megiddo: The Omega Code 2. Amanda Ryan and Edward Atterton lead a cast of 24 credited performers that includes Jacqueline Bisset, Ben Daniels, John Rhys-Davies and Bruce Payne. Running 93 minutes, the production was a British and American co-venture from Flashpoint and Regent Entertainment.
Opinion on the film is divided. It holds a critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 33 reviews, while audiences on TMDB rate it 6.8 out of 10 from 81 votes, a friendlier figure than its 5.2 out of 10 on IMDb from 1,700 votes. The spread suggests a film that critics and many viewers on the larger site received coolly, but that a smaller audience valued more highly.
